Viniculture
After the prehistoric Pannonian Sea withdrew from the region, it left a sandy terrain and the Palić Lake. On this sandy soil of the Palić wine route, some old grape varieties have traditionally been cultivated for 300 years.
The refined "sandy wines" and some delicious dishes of Serbian, Hungarian and Bunjevac cuisine can be tasted on the Palić Wine Route in the Subotica region.
In addition to the cherry-fruity variety Kadarka, the grapes Kevedinka and Muscat Croquant are used to produce a dry white wine. In the new vineyards of the Palić Wine Route mainly white grape varieties are grown: Italian Riesling, Rhine Riesling, White Burgundy, Ezerjó and Chardonnay.
In the time when the phylloxera epidemic in the early 18th Century destroyed a large part of the European vineyards, this region was spared from the destruction and was therefore particularly respected by the European winegrowers. At that time the wine cellars Čoka and Palić were founded, which until today form the basis of viticulture in this region.
